What to Wear for Your Maternity Session: Tips for Stunning Photos
Choosing the perfect outfit for your maternity photos can be overwhelming, but I’m here to help you look your best. As a maternity photographer, I know that what works in everyday life might not always translate well in photos. Keep reading for my top tips on what to wear. At the end, you’ll find links to my favourite dresses and stores to shop at.
Coordinating Tones and Textures Without Matching
When planning your maternity session, it’s important to coordinate tones and textures without identically matching each other. This creates a harmonious look while ensuring each person stands out. Remember, I have a small client wardrobe available for you to use during your session if you choose.
Outfits for Your Partner and Kids
When deciding what your partner and kids should wear, aim for coordination rather than matching. If everyone wears the same colour, you’ll blend into each other, making it hard to see the separation. Instead, choose complementary colours. Pinterest is a great resource for finding colour combinations and getting ideas.
Fabrics to Avoid
Avoid stiff cotton fabrics as they don’t flow nicely and can become very wrinkly. Opt for materials that drape well and enhance your natural shape.
Dress for the Season
Consider the weather when choosing your outfit. For hot weather, pick breathable fabrics. For cooler weather, choose long-sleeved dresses or bring a chunky knit cardigan. Chunky knits are versatile and can be worn off the shoulders for a stylish look, and they also keep you warm between shots.
Undergarments
Wear seamless underwear to avoid visible lines under your dress. For bras, ensure the straps won’t show, or consider using pasties instead. Choose undergarments in colors that won’t show through your dress.
